Perception of prominence patterns in English nominal compounds
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates prominence patterns in English nounnoun compounds. A perception experiment is presented in which naive listeners rated the prominence relation between the two elements. It is found that either the first or the second element of the stimuli is perceived as more prominent, and that the distinction can be considered categorical. Pertinent statistics are discussed that can assess the reliability of different raters. It is shown that right prominence is more difficult to perceive by many listeners than left prominence.

Does branching direction determine prominence assignment? An empirical investigation of triconstituent compounds in English
This paper investigates the prominence patterns of nominal triconstituent compounds in English. The standard assumption for such NNN compounds is that the branching-direction is responsible for stress assignment. In left-branching compounds, i.e. those of the structure [[NN] N], the leftmost noun is assigned highest prominence whereas in right-branching compounds, i.e. [N [NN]], the second noun...
متن کاملWhat Is Compound Stress?
This paper investigates the implementation of stress in English noun-noun compounds. First, a perception experiment examines how listeners perceive prominence in compounds. After that, significant acoustic correlates of prominence are established. Finally, a cluster analysis is described that classifies compounds on the basis of their phonetic features and which is capable of separating differe...
متن کاملRelative Importance in English and Persian: Thematization or Tonic Prominence?
There are two common ways to assign relative importance in spoken language: tonic prominence and thematization. The former is expressing the main points of information units in speech (Halliday, 1994), and the latter is putting an element at the beginning of a clause. This study explores how relative importance is realized in English and Persian. It also investigates how advanced Persian learne...
متن کاملBridging articulation and perception: The C/D model and contrastive emphasis
This paper compares prominence that listeners perceive with actual articulatory prominence. We calculated phrasal boundaries from articulatory patterns using an algorithm of the C/D model, and compared those calculated boundaries with perceived boundaries. The jaw displacements, measures of prominence, were measured using EMA; articulatory boundaries were derived from a C/D model algorithm. The...
متن کاملAcoustic correlates of prosodic prominence for naïve listeners of American English
0. Introduction This study examines the acoustic correlates of prosodic prominence as perceived by a large number of native listeners of American English who are naïve to the phonetics and phonology of prosody. In English, as in other stress languages, speech utterances are chunked into smaller prosodic phrases, and within a prosodic phrase some words are assigned phrasal stress, which typicall...
